92nd Academy Awards Recap: Complete With Prizes

Feb 13, 2020

The 92nd Academy Awards came and went in the blink of an eye! Like 2019, this year’s show went hostless, but that didn’t take away from the record-breaking moments, stellar performances, surprises, amazing speeches and more! Hollywood’s biggest night shined bright, giving us plenty to talk about. So, let's get right to it.

Janelle Monáe kicked off the night with an opening number that channeled A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Joker, and more, bringing the crowd to life! And even though there wasn’t a host, there was still plenty of roasting courtesy of Steve Martin and Chris Rock.

Parasite made history by becoming the first-ever foreign-language film to win Best Picture. Their big win topped off a stellar night for Bong Joon-ho and crew, winning four Oscars total for the South Korean film.

Did we mention there were plenty of surprises? Let’s be real, what’s the Oscars without a few surprises (good or bad)? The Irishman, once considered a favorite in multiple categories, was shut out. Ford v Ferrari beat out The Irishman and other favored movies in Best Film Editing to win their only Oscar of the night.

Eminem also made a surprise performance and we are living for the reactions.

Our favorite surprise of the night though would have to be Brad Pitt mentioning drive-ins during his speech. Did anyone else catch that? We were in awe and it just goes to show how impactful drive-ins can be in someone’s life. Now the question becomes: was he talking about West Wind? We like to think so...although we can’t say for sure. Let us have this moment!

As entertaining as the Oscars are, the show itself is only half the fun. For the complete Oscar experience, you have to record your picks on the ballot and then compare them to the final results. Some of our general managers did just that in this year’s bracket, continuing an annual tradition.

Capitol, El Rancho, Las Vegas, Sacramento, and Solano cast their votes in 13 select categories. Here’s how it went down:

El Rancho had a rough showing, with only one correct guess -- Joaquin Phoenix as Best Actor for his role in Joker. Sacramento wasn’t far behind with only guessing two categories correctly. Solano came in third with three correct picks. Let’s get a drum roll going for the big winner of the night. Will it be Capitol or Las Vegas?

*imaginary drum roll ensues*

The winner of this year’s Oscar ballot bracket is (pauses for dramatic effect) Capitol, with nine correct votes, blowing the competition out of the water (Las Vegas had 4)!

What’s exciting about Capitol’s complete domination is that we are going to have a drawing for FREE carload passes for visitors at our Capitol location in San Jose. If you are a Capitol Drive-in moviegoer, all you have to do is comment on our Facebook post for a chance to win. Good luck!
